How to Travel With Pets

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., – Going on a vacation soon with your furry friend? If you're planning on taking a long drive to get you and your pet to your destination, traveling with them involves more than just monitoring them while you drive. Knowing how to travel with pets will make the road trip process easier for everyone in the vehicle, yourself included. Follow these tips to make sure your pet obtains an enjoyable experience in your vehicle, regardless of the drive time!

Before the Trip

Before you leave, you'll want to make sure your pet can get used to longer drives. Take them on short drives a few weeks prior, making each drive slightly longer than the last. This way, they'll be able to get used to spending increased time in the vehicle, making them feel less anxious for longer journeys. You can ensure the safety and security of your pets by purchasing a large and comfortable carrier for them. It should be large enough so that they can sit, stand, lie down, and turn around in. Also having them get used to it before you leave on your trip is a good idea.

What to Pack

Depending on where you travel, you may or may not need your pet's rabies vaccination records. Some states require proof of this at interstate crossings. While this isn't usually an issue, it's better to be safe than sorry. You should also make sure you pack these items to ensure your pet enjoys a safe and fun ride:

• Food and water with bowls
• Leash
• Waste scoop
• Plastic bags
• Any medication needed
• Bed for sleeping
• Collar w/tag imprinted with your address/phone number
• Favorite toy/pillow
• Paper towels/stain and odor remover (just in case!)

During the Trip

While your pets are bound to enjoy the fun ride, it's up to you as the owner to remain attentive and make sure that your pet has everything it may need for an enjoyable experience. About three to four hours before you leave, you should feed your pet a light meal. From there, you should feed them every time you stop to use the bathroom or if they have to use the bathroom. Don't feed them in a moving vehicle! Other tips that can help make or break your drive may include:

• Bring bottled or tap water so your pet doesn't get an upset stomach with unfamiliar water.
• Make sure your pet's crate is well secured and ventilated to maximize safety and comfortability.
• Don't leave your animal alone in your vehicle on a hot or cold day! Your vehicle works like a furnace or freezer and can severely harm a dog if left unchecked, even with the windows down.
• If you drive a pickup, do not let your pet sit in the truck bed for extended periods of time. They can fall out or potentially be harmed by road debris.
• Stop frequently (at least 2-3 hours in between drives) so you and your pet can stretch and use the bathroom if needed.
• Make sure to call ahead to your hotel or wherever you're staying to ensure that your room is pet friendly.

After the Trip

Now that you're home, it's time to relax and get everything taken out of your vehicle. Once you're unpacked, you'll want to get your vehicle back up to speed as soon as possible. If your pet sheds frequently and your backseat is now coated in hair, use the "rubber glove" trick to get as much fur as you can. Moisten a rubber glove and use it to collect loose pet hair for easy removal, then finish off the job with your vacuum cleaner. A great way to manage fur is to invest in a seat cover or keep your pets in your crate. If you sprinkle baking soda on your floor and cloth seats and vacuum it after leaving it overnight, your vehicle will smell good as new!

Today, we'll be going over certified pre-owned vs. used vehicles and the differences between the two so you can make the purchasing decision that best suits your needs!

What is a CPO Vehicle?

A certified pre-owned vehicle, or CPO for short, is a used vehicle that's typically 6 or less years old, has gone through a series of inspections and repairs, and is covered by a manufacturer for an extended period or amount of miles. While each vehicle manufacturer offers slightly different CPO programs, most offer the same benefits. Let's take a look at some of the pros and cons. 

Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles

Pros:

• They will always have a clean title. During the selection process, vehicle history reports are thoroughly looked at to determine the title's status. If the vehicle has a salvaged title or otherwise, it's usually not selected to become a CPO vehicle.
• They have to pass a rigorous inspection process. Important components within the vehicle are inspected in order to ensure it is properly working and can handle the road ahead. If there are issues found during the inspection process, they will likely be fixed or the component will be reconditioned to the manufacturer's standard.
• They have extensive warranty coverage. Most, if not all of your vehicle will have warranties on parts. These warranties are typically to 100,000 miles or so, which means you'll be able to reap the benefits for months or even years to come. Depending on the CPO program, you might also get roadside assistance benefits as well! 
• They are typically newer and come with more features. You'll be able to get a vehicle that will be no older than 5 years for a fraction of the price of a new vehicle!

Cons:

• CPO's might cost slightly more than used vehicles, but they offer benefits like the included warranties that help to make up for the small price difference.
• Your vehicle may have had previous extensive service due to a collision or incident in its past, but that doesn't mean it isn't "up-to-code". Used Vehicles

Pros:

• There are a wider range of vehicles if you choose to go with a used vehicle. This is because CPO vehicles must meet the standards of its individual manufacturer. Shopping used might give you more freedom to get a vehicle within your needs.
• They may be less expensive than CPO vehicles. This wide range of used vehicles comes with a wide price range, meaning you can choose to purchase a less expensive vehicle and have more money in your pocket. 
• They offer the freedom of warranty and protection program selection. With a CPO, the warranty is typically included, but with a used vehicle, you're free to choose which programs suit your driving habits best.

Cons:

• The used vehicle may be inspected by the dealership to determine its health, but doesn't need to meet the strict requirements of the manufacturer. The vehicle can also have a salvaged or damaged title, which can mean more complications for you to deal with. 
• Warranties aren't typically included with the vehicle purchase, and therefore up to you to choose and purchase yourself through the dealership or through a third party vendor. It's up to you to decide which option is best for you and your driving habits. 
• Used vehicles can be simply unpredictable. Even if the vehicle was inspected and runs well, problems can pop-up soon after purchase and it's usually up to you to pay for the cost of repair. Keep a special eye out for warranties through the dealership, and buying as-is vehicles to avoid even more surprises.

Volkswagen I.D. Buzz Concept Vehicle Debuts at NAIAS

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., – This groovy, retro-looking microbus isn't a vintage vehicle from the 70's. It's actually a futuristic, fully autonomous, zero-emissions, concept vehicle, bringing back the days of the VW Bus. The Volkswagen I.D. Buzz concept vehicle debuted at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) over the weekend, bringing with it the promise of a traveling experience like nothing we've ever seen before.

The I.D. Buzz will be emission-free, with an all electric driving range of up to 270 miles. Volkswagen plans to push forward with their electric initiative by 2020, when they plan to launch a new line of fully electric vehicles. Another interesting and innovative idea behind the I.D. Buzz is the ability of the user to charge the vehicle using a regular household outlet. The I.D. Buzz will be fully autonomous, meaning the steering wheel will be retractable, switching from manual driving mode to I.D. Pilot mode, seamlessly.

In addition to its futuristic attributes, the I.D. Buzz promises tons of space and unlimited possibilities for travelers. Seating for 8 and luggage storage areas means trips will be convenient and comfortable for passengers. It's visual design is obviously reminiscent of its iconic predecessor, the Volkswagen Bus, but brings with it the technology and features desired by today's consumers.

Subaru Share the Love Event 2016

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., – Subaru has announced that Subaru Share the Love event will return for 2016. In it's ninth year, Subaru will place no cap the total donation amount, hoping to exceed $90 million total since the event's inception.

For any New Subaru vehicle purchased or leased from November 17, 2016 to January 3, 2017, Subaru will donate $250 to a donation of the customers choice. They can choose from ASPCA, Make-A-Wish, Meals on Wheels America, or the National Park Foundation.

As well as the national charities, Subaru dealers are encouraged to choose a local charity to support. Over 660 hometown organizations will be supported this year by the Subaru Share the Love event. Serra of Traverse City will be supporting the Women's Resource Center!

2017 Audi TT Is a Sporty Everyday Driver

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.––If you're looking for a little luxury, a little fun, and driver-centric features to come with your car, the 2017 Audi TT might just be what you're looking for. The TT is now at its third-generation and has been fully redesigned. It'll be available in the TT, TTS Coupe, and convertible models. While the design on the outside might speak pure sport, the interior features and driving experience make it clear that the 2017 Audi TT is a sporty everyday driver.

Although the exterior may look similar to the 2016 model, the 2017 Audi TT is more defined which makes it a more narrow car. The new headlamps, grille, and hood resemble a bit of the R8 and make the stance look mean and stealthy. Audi purposefully looked to their R8 supercar for design inspiration.

The interior of the 2017 Audi TT also takes on a more sporty feel with a driver-centric cockpit. Details like the dash shape, round vents, and all around cabin layout makes the TT feel like a sports car on the inside. The new Audi Virtual Cockpit display is a 12.3-inch screen connected with steering wheel controls, and a touch pad on the center console. The interior will feel better for passengers with more legroom plus more active safety features like secondary brake assist.

While the car speaks sport in terms of design, the 2017 TT will not include a manual gearbox. It will include a 2.0L turbocharged inline 4 which makes for up to 220hp, while the TTS will get up to 292hp. The lighter body makes the TT feel more nimble and achieves 60 mph in 5.3 seconds; the TTS in 4.6 seconds. Thanks to the electronic systems help to elevate the experience by creating sporty sounds that reach the cabin for a satisfying sporty driving feel. Not to mention Audi Drive Select is a system included that allows the driver to adjust the stability behavior, throttle sensitivity, and range of powertrain.

All these features combined make the 2017 Audi TT a sporty everyday driver suitable for any driver who wants just a little more out of their car. and is slated to reach dealerships before this fall.
