How to Travel With Pets

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., – Going on a vacation soon with your furry friend? If you're planning on taking a long drive to get you and your pet to your destination, traveling with them involves more than just monitoring them while you drive. Knowing how to travel with pets will make the road trip process easier for everyone in the vehicle, yourself included. Follow these tips to make sure your pet obtains an enjoyable experience in your vehicle, regardless of the drive time!

Before the Trip

Before you leave, you'll want to make sure your pet can get used to longer drives. Take them on short drives a few weeks prior, making each drive slightly longer than the last. This way, they'll be able to get used to spending increased time in the vehicle, making them feel less anxious for longer journeys. You can ensure the safety and security of your pets by purchasing a large and comfortable carrier for them. It should be large enough so that they can sit, stand, lie down, and turn around in. Also having them get used to it before you leave on your trip is a good idea.

What to Pack

Depending on where you travel, you may or may not need your pet's rabies vaccination records. Some states require proof of this at interstate crossings. While this isn't usually an issue, it's better to be safe than sorry. You should also make sure you pack these items to ensure your pet enjoys a safe and fun ride:

• Food and water with bowls
• Leash
• Waste scoop
• Plastic bags
• Any medication needed
• Bed for sleeping
• Collar w/tag imprinted with your address/phone number
• Favorite toy/pillow
• Paper towels/stain and odor remover (just in case!)

During the Trip

While your pets are bound to enjoy the fun ride, it's up to you as the owner to remain attentive and make sure that your pet has everything it may need for an enjoyable experience. About three to four hours before you leave, you should feed your pet a light meal. From there, you should feed them every time you stop to use the bathroom or if they have to use the bathroom. Don't feed them in a moving vehicle! Other tips that can help make or break your drive may include:

• Bring bottled or tap water so your pet doesn't get an upset stomach with unfamiliar water.
• Make sure your pet's crate is well secured and ventilated to maximize safety and comfortability.
• Don't leave your animal alone in your vehicle on a hot or cold day! Your vehicle works like a furnace or freezer and can severely harm a dog if left unchecked, even with the windows down.
• If you drive a pickup, do not let your pet sit in the truck bed for extended periods of time. They can fall out or potentially be harmed by road debris.
• Stop frequently (at least 2-3 hours in between drives) so you and your pet can stretch and use the bathroom if needed.
• Make sure to call ahead to your hotel or wherever you're staying to ensure that your room is pet friendly.

After the Trip

Now that you're home, it's time to relax and get everything taken out of your vehicle. Once you're unpacked, you'll want to get your vehicle back up to speed as soon as possible. If your pet sheds frequently and your backseat is now coated in hair, use the "rubber glove" trick to get as much fur as you can. Moisten a rubber glove and use it to collect loose pet hair for easy removal, then finish off the job with your vacuum cleaner. A great way to manage fur is to invest in a seat cover or keep your pets in your crate. If you sprinkle baking soda on your floor and cloth seats and vacuum it after leaving it overnight, your vehicle will smell good as new!

Certified Pre-Owned Vs. Used Vehicles

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.,–– If you're in the market to purchase a vehicle, there are quite a few options to consider. While some people may opt to lease or purchase a new vehicle, others would rather buy a used car or a certified pre-owned vehicle. Today, we'll be going over certified pre-owned vs. used vehicles and the differences between the two so you can make the purchasing decision that best suits your needs!

What is a CPO Vehicle?

A certified pre-owned vehicle, or CPO for short, is a used vehicle that's typically 6 or less years old, has gone through a series of inspections and repairs, and is covered by a manufacturer for an extended period or amount of miles. While each vehicle manufacturer offers slightly different CPO programs, most offer the same benefits. Let's take a look at some of the pros and cons. 

Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles

Pros:

• They will always have a clean title. During the selection process, vehicle history reports are thoroughly looked at to determine the title's status. If the vehicle has a salvaged title or otherwise, it's usually not selected to become a CPO vehicle.
• They have to pass a rigorous inspection process. Important components within the vehicle are inspected in order to ensure it is properly working and can handle the road ahead. If there are issues found during the inspection process, they will likely be fixed or the component will be reconditioned to the manufacturer's standard.
• They have extensive warranty coverage. Most, if not all of your vehicle will have warranties on parts. These warranties are typically to 100,000 miles or so, which means you'll be able to reap the benefits for months or even years to come. Depending on the CPO program, you might also get roadside assistance benefits as well! 
• They are typically newer and come with more features. You'll be able to get a vehicle that will be no older than 5 years for a fraction of the price of a new vehicle!

Cons:

• CPO's might cost slightly more than used vehicles, but they offer benefits like the included warranties that help to make up for the small price difference.
• Your vehicle may have had previous extensive service due to a collision or incident in its past, but that doesn't mean it isn't "up-to-code". All CPO vehicles must meet the strict standards of the manufacturer, so you can be sure it's safe to drive despite its past. You can see all of this information on the vehicle history report.

Used Vehicles

Pros:

• There are a wider range of vehicles if you choose to go with a used vehicle. This is because CPO vehicles must meet the standards of its individual manufacturer. Shopping used might give you more freedom to get a vehicle within your needs.
• They may be less expensive than CPO vehicles. This wide range of used vehicles comes with a wide price range, meaning you can choose to purchase a less expensive vehicle and have more money in your pocket. 
• They offer the freedom of warranty and protection program selection. With a CPO, the warranty is typically included, but with a used vehicle, you're free to choose which programs suit your driving habits best.

Cons:

• The used vehicle may be inspected by the dealership to determine its health, but doesn't need to meet the strict requirements of the manufacturer. The vehicle can also have a salvaged or damaged title, which can mean more complications for you to deal with. 
• Warranties aren't typically included with the vehicle purchase, and therefore up to you to choose and purchase yourself through the dealership or through a third party vendor. It's up to you to decide which option is best for you and your driving habits. 
• Used vehicles can be simply unpredictable. Even if the vehicle was inspected and runs well, problems can pop-up soon after purchase and it's usually up to you to pay for the cost of repair. Keep a special eye out for warranties through the dealership, and buying as-is vehicles to avoid even more surprises.

Audi A8 Debuts in the New Spiderman Movie

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., – This July, everyone's favorite superhero will get a new traveling companion with some superpowers of its own. The Audi A8 debuts in the new Spiderman movie this summer, giving viewers a firsthand look at some of its flashy features and benefits. The A8 won't be the only vehicle featured in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tony Stark, better known as Iron Man, will be sporting the iconic Audi R8 V10 Spyder - a vehicle renowned for its unparalleled style and one-of-a-kind features.

Audi showcases some of the A8's newest features in a short digital film entitled "Driver's Test". In it, Peter Parker takes his driver's test using the A8 and some of its exclusive features. At one point, Peter removes his hands from the steering wheel and shows the driving instructor that the A8, under certain conditions, can temporarily take over driving when the Audi AI Traffic Jam feature is activated. This futuristic feature will be coming to other Audi vehicles soon, but fans of the Spiderman series got a firsthand glimpse of it during this short. When Spiderman notices a bank robbery, he quickly eliminates the problem while the driving instructor grades him without taking his eyes off of his clipboard.

• Check the pollen count before leaving the house

The biggest trigger of seasonal allergies is pollen, and keeping an eye on the pollen count on sunny days is key. Going to the beach or the lake can be very effective against pollen, though, so make sure you plan accordingly!

• Wash your hair before bed

Your hair collects a lot of pollen throughout the day. If you wash it before you go to bed, it won't collect on your bed and you'll feel a lot less sick when you wake up.

• Dry your clothes inside

If you dry your sheets or clothing on clotheslines, they can accumulate pollen as well, which can make sleeping and even walking around in clothing very uncomfortable.

• Wear sunglasses!

Itchy eyes bothering you? The best way to avoid irritation is to protect your eyes with sunglasses or goggles, especially when you're gardening or doing yard work on hot and sunny days.

• Use air conditioning in your car

If you like driving with your windows down, you expose yourself to a lot of fast-moving pollen that can make your sinuses react poorly. Using air conditioning can keep you safe and focused on the road without any distractions!

Tips to Stay Healthy During Flu Season

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., – Flu season is in full swing and although the we have been having some unseasonably warm weather, it's still easy to find yourself feeling a little less than 100%. We've compiled our favorite tips to stay healthy during flu season so you can stay on your feet this winter. 1. Wash Your Hands

This might seem like a no-brainer, but washing your hands is the most important means of stopping the spread of germs. Think about how many surfaces you come in contact with during a typical day. Doorknobs, keyboards, mouses, pens and pencils, faucets - all are generally bacteria filled. Consider how many other people touch these same surfaces and you'll be running to the sink to soap up.

2. Disinfect Community Surfaces

Going back to number one, touching contaminated surfaces is a great way to end up sick. During a time when viruses and bacteria are swarming around us, it's important to clean community surfaces, like doorknobs, light switches, and faucets, regularly.

3. Eat Healthy

We can't control the habits of those around us but we can do our best to keep our own immune systems strong. Eating healthy and balanced meals that our bodies crave is a good way to ensure your own health. Give yourself the best chance at warding off illness by eating lots of fruits and vegetables!

4. Exercise Regularly

Exercise is also an immune system booster. Increasing your heart rate and getting a little sweaty are good ways to keep your immune system strong and healthy in the midst of flu season. Whatever your preferred method of exercise, your body will thank you later!
