How to Travel With Pets

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., – Going on a vacation soon with your furry friend? If you're planning on taking a long drive to get you and your pet to your destination, traveling with them involves more than just monitoring them while you drive. Knowing how to travel with pets will make the road trip process easier for everyone in the vehicle, yourself included. Follow these tips to make sure your pet obtains an enjoyable experience in your vehicle, regardless of the drive time!

Before the Trip

Before you leave, you'll want to make sure your pet can get used to longer drives. Take them on short drives a few weeks prior, making each drive slightly longer than the last. This way, they'll be able to get used to spending increased time in the vehicle, making them feel less anxious for longer journeys. You can ensure the safety and security of your pets by purchasing a large and comfortable carrier for them. It should be large enough so that they can sit, stand, lie down, and turn around in. Also having them get used to it before you leave on your trip is a good idea.

What to Pack

Depending on where you travel, you may or may not need your pet's rabies vaccination records. Some states require proof of this at interstate crossings. While this isn't usually an issue, it's better to be safe than sorry. You should also make sure you pack these items to ensure your pet enjoys a safe and fun ride:

• Food and water with bowls
• Leash
• Waste scoop
• Plastic bags
• Any medication needed
• Bed for sleeping
• Collar w/tag imprinted with your address/phone number
• Favorite toy/pillow
• Paper towels/stain and odor remover (just in case!)

During the Trip

While your pets are bound to enjoy the fun ride, it's up to you as the owner to remain attentive and make sure that your pet has everything it may need for an enjoyable experience. About three to four hours before you leave, you should feed your pet a light meal. From there, you should feed them every time you stop to use the bathroom or if they have to use the bathroom. Don't feed them in a moving vehicle! Other tips that can help make or break your drive may include:

• Bring bottled or tap water so your pet doesn't get an upset stomach with unfamiliar water.
• Make sure your pet's crate is well secured and ventilated to maximize safety and comfortability.
• Don't leave your animal alone in your vehicle on a hot or cold day! Your vehicle works like a furnace or freezer and can severely harm a dog if left unchecked, even with the windows down.
• If you drive a pickup, do not let your pet sit in the truck bed for extended periods of time. They can fall out or potentially be harmed by road debris.
• Stop frequently (at least 2-3 hours in between drives) so you and your pet can stretch and use the bathroom if needed.
• Make sure to call ahead to your hotel or wherever you're staying to ensure that your room is pet friendly.

After the Trip

Now that you're home, it's time to relax and get everything taken out of your vehicle. Once you're unpacked, you'll want to get your vehicle back up to speed as soon as possible. If your pet sheds frequently and your backseat is now coated in hair, use the "rubber glove" trick to get as much fur as you can. Moisten a rubber glove and use it to collect loose pet hair for easy removal, then finish off the job with your vacuum cleaner. A great way to manage fur is to invest in a seat cover or keep your pets in your crate. If you sprinkle baking soda on your floor and cloth seats and vacuum it after leaving it overnight, your vehicle will smell good as new!

The Traverse City Junior Golf Association's goal is "to teach life skills through golf", and they've been doing so since 1984! The Junior Golf Association provides education to younger students by allowing them to build and develop their golfing skills, teaching them patience, respect, and confidence in their abilities. They currently have over 350 youths from ages 5-22 registered, with over 56 tournaments and multiple golf courses to choose from.

Toyota Opens North American Headquarters in Texas

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.,–– Celebrating 60 long and productive years in the United States, Toyota opens its North American Headquarters in Texas, once again reaffirming its longstanding commitment to the states. The 100-acre, $1 billion corporate campus, located in Plano Texas, commemorated its grand opening with a gala event, hosting community leaders, partners, and dignitaries. The newly opened headquarters make up a portion of Toyota's $10 billion investment in the United States over the next 5 years, and will add over 4,000 jobs to the Texas area by the end of 2017. Toyota announced that over 1,000 of these employees will be hired from the rich local talent market and surrounding areas.

Occupancy in the Toyota headquarters began in the late spring and team members are expected to be transitioning to their new corporate base until late December. With this grand opening, Toyota received a written congratulations from the White House, signed by the President. Toyota's commitment to the United States over the past 60 years includes over 10 manufacturing assembly facilities, 1,500 Toyota dealerships, and 136,000 direct and dealer employees. 

Toyota's campus supports the One Toyota Vision, creating spaces and locations that encourage transparency within corporate culture. The seven buildings all congregate in the center courtyard, where dining, the fitness center, and conferencing facilities are held. 

“The opening of our new headquarters in Plano is an extraordinary next step in Toyota’s 60-year journey in the United States,” said Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota in North America. “With team members from four different companies together in one campus location, we believe this will inspire greater collaboration, innovation, and faster decision making as we turn to and lead the future of mobility, all with an eye on our customers.”

The corporate campus aims to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, showing their commitment to sustainability. They hope to do this with drought-resistant plants, over 20,000 solar panels, a rainwater irrigation system, and a vow to only use sustainable energy. The exterior of the campus will reflect the native habitat, preventing the rise of invasive species, and their 400,000-gallon irrigation system will keep the local flora and fauna in the area alive and healthy.

After over 5 million hours of work, 142,500 yards of concrete, and over 12 acres of glass, Toyota opens its North American headquarters in Texas. This state-of-the-art facility, located in Plano, Texas, is now open to the public. Tips on How to Enjoy Your Summer With Seasonal Allergies

Runny noses, congestion and itchy eyes can make or break the start of summer for some. However, there are several steps you can take in order to prevent the allergies from ruining the beginning of your summer. Here are a few tips on how to enjoy your summer with seasonal allergies:

• Check the pollen count before leaving the house

The biggest trigger of seasonal allergies is pollen, and keeping an eye on the pollen count on sunny days is key. Going to the beach or the lake can be very effective against pollen, though, so make sure you plan accordingly!

• Wash your hair before bed

Your hair collects a lot of pollen throughout the day. If you wash it before you go to bed, it won't collect on your bed and you'll feel a lot less sick when you wake up.

• Dry your clothes inside

If you dry your sheets or clothing on clotheslines, they can accumulate pollen as well, which can make sleeping and even walking around in clothing very uncomfortable.

• Wear sunglasses!

Itchy eyes bothering you? The best way to avoid irritation is to protect your eyes with sunglasses or goggles, especially when you're gardening or doing yard work on hot and sunny days.

• Use air conditioning in your car

If you like driving with your windows down, you expose yourself to a lot of fast-moving pollen that can make your sinuses react poorly. Using air conditioning can keep you safe and focused on the road without any distractions!
