TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.–– This week marks National Tire Safety Week, and now is the perfect time to learn just why your tires and caring for them is so important. The tires on your vehicle are one of the biggest safety components and are responsible for keeping your vehicle rolling the right way on the road. Thanks to one of our wonderful vehicle brands, Nissan, we've got some tips to help you best care for your tires. Let's all celebrate National Tire Safety Week with Nissan!
This week is all about reminding consumers to check their tires all year long, but especially during the summer. As Memorial Day has ended, summer has unofficially begun and that means it's time for road trips in the hot sun. Keeping your vehicle's tires in check means properly maintaining air pressure and tread wear. Doing this will not only help extend the life of your tires, but help you achieve the best fuel economy, engine performance, and most importantly keep you safe on the road! What can you do to make this happen? Follow the tips below to get started:
-Inflate Your Tires Properly:
Checking your tires air pressure is typically done with a tire gauge which measures in PSI (pounds per square inch of air pressure). Having properly inflated tires can help you achieve good fuel economy and extend the life of your tires. If your tires are under inflated, your car will have to work harder to move which means you'll be spending more on gas. You can find the recommended tire pressure on the sticker on the inside of the driver's door, or in your Owner's Manual. Nissan wants to remind you that temperatures fluctuate throughout the year and can affect your tire's air pressure. It's best to check your tires in the morning at least once per month for the most accurate reading."Checking tire pressure for just a few minutes each month can help protect your family, improve vehicle performance and lengthen the life of tires," said Sarah Cardinali, senior manager, Product Safety, Nissan North America. "Our innovative Easy-Fill Tire Alert system helps drivers fill their tires to their recommended inflation rating with ease."
-Rotate and Balance Your Tires Regularly:
Another routine maintenance task to help you achieve best fuel economy and extended tire life is rotating them! This is a task that should be done every 5,000-7,000 miles or about every other oil change. Tires can wear differently depending on their location, rotating them regularly will help cut down on uneven tread wear so they are all on the same page, so to speak. Having your tires balanced will also help to minimize premature wear.
-Keep Your Vehicle's Load Weight in Check:
While your tires hold the entire weight of your vehicle, they can only hold a certain amount of excess weight. Nissan recommends not overloading past your vehicle's recommended rating to avoid potential tire blowouts. Excessive weight on or in your vehicle can lead to weaker tires and possible damage. Make sure to check your Owner's Manual to find the rating specific to your vehicle.-Inspect Your Tires Tread Wear:
There are no special tools needed to inspect your tires wear. Your eyes will work just fine. Taking a look every few weeks or so for damage, cracking, under inflation, and uneven tread wear is the easiest way to tell if your tires need care! For an easy way to check tread wear, try the penny method! If by sticking your penny in upside down in your tire's tread you can see all of Abraham Lincoln's head, it's time to get new tires.Hopefully these tips have helped you learn about the importance of tire maintenance. National Tire Safety Week with Nissan is one we want to fully embrace and help you embrace as well! We'd be happy to inspect your tires at your next oil change to make sure you're running safely on the road.
