Serra Cares Community Involvement in Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., – It's been an exciting year for Serra of Traverse City. One of our biggest focuses this year has been to get more involved with our community and the incredible organizations within it. We're proud to continue initiating new community partnerships while also maintaining our involvement with the annual relationships our team has built with local organizations. Our team members who live in and around the Traverse City area, have worked hard to do their part to make our community a great place to live and work. We're more than honored to be able to continue to sponsor, host, and take part in events around the Traverse City area!

Serra Cares Community Involvement in Traverse City

This past March, Serra of Traverse City was humbled to be involved in the 11th Annual Katie Heinz Memorial Basketball Tournament. Katie Heinz was a basketball player with a big heart and trademark positive attitude, who passed away at the age of 16 to Leukemia. The tournament to honor Katie was held on March 5th at St. Francis High School, where the teachers and students competed in a series of not-quite-official-rules games! Not to mention, the student team was coached by Serra Traverse City’s very own Jerry Zezulka! All players in the tournament sported #32 jerseys with the catchphrase "Keep Believin'!" to honor Katie's spirit. Over $14,000 was raised from this event, and was donated to the new Cowell Family Cancer Center at Munson Hospital in Traverse City! 

Grand Opening Week at Serra of Traverse City

In May, we began our Grand Opening Week Celebration at Serra of Traverse City. On Tuesday, May 10th, 2016, as a part of our Grand Opening, Serra of Traverse City proudly presented a check to the Father Fred Foundation of Traverse City for $7,577 – all of which was donated in partnership with Subaru of America's Share the Love Event where contributions from each vehicle sale in December and January were collected to support the foundation.

Then, on Wednesday May 11th, 2016, we celebrated and offered thanks to our wonderful Veterans and Active Troops with a free steak lunch at our South Campus location, home to our Subaru and Cadillac dealerships. We were proud to be able to serve 125 Veterans lunch, but we’re setting an even higher goal for ourselves next year to serve 250 Veteran lunches!

On Friday May 13th, 2016, we celebrated our loyal guests with free burgers, hot dogs, and Moomers ice cream at our Customer Appreciation Luncheon. We had a blast encouraging everyone who attended to sign up for the exciting prizes that would be raffled off after the Serra Cares 5K the next day.

Last but not least, the inaugural Serra Cares 5K took place on Saturday, May 14th, 2016 in partnership with 9&10 News to benefit Camp Quality of Michigan – a non-profit camp that serves children with cancer by allowing them to attend camp in August at no cost to their family. Throughout the Grand Opening Week, we collected donations of $50 per vehicle sold to add to the donations raised through race registration and vendor contributions. Despite the cold weather we had an amazing time, and raised a total of $8,000 for Camp Quality of Michigan. We were even lucky enough to be joined by two of Camp Quality's campers, who gave out medals and smiles at the finish line! We couldn't have been more excited about the outcome of our Serra Cares 5k, and look forward to an even better event next year!

Maintaining and Creating Local Relationships

Building on the positive community relationships our team has built over the years, we are honored to continue to foster local relationships with community organizations and events like the TC Patriot Game, Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools Gladhandler Auction, the Detroit Red Wings, the Iceman Cometh Challenge, and more. Many of these annual events are taking place soon, so read on to learn how you can get involved!

Serra Traverse City is proud to be an annual sponsor of one of Traverse City's most honorable events, the TC Patriot Game. The players of Traverse City Central High School and Traverse City West High School will challenge each other in an exciting game that will be held on Friday, September 9th, 2016. It's not only for a good time, but to honor those who answered the call to serve our country no matter the circumstances! Proceeds from the 5th Annual TC Patriot Game and T-Shirt Sale will benefit the Veteran-to-Veteran program. We hope to see you there!

The Annual Gladhandler Auction is another local event we're happy to sponsor and contribute a Grand Prize for. The gala, established in 1983, includes a live auction, silent auction, raffle prize drawings, fine food and drink, dancing, and more! This year’s event takes place on Saturday, October 29th, 2016 to benefit the Grand Traverse Area Catholic School's continued availability of top-quality, Christ-centered education in Traverse City. Join us for the gala and a chance to win our 2017 Cadillac XT5 Grand Prize, or $32,000 Cash!

Another quickly approaching event is the arrival of the Detroit Red Wings hockey team. Every year the Wings come to train and hone their skills for the upcoming season in the Cherry Capital area. As we have for the past 9 years, Serra Toyota of Traverse City is honored to provide all the vehicles needed for transportation during the team’s time spent in Traverse City!

We also couldn’t help but seize the opportunity to get involved with the Iceman Cometh Challenge as a sponsor for even more fun! The Iceman Cometh Challenge is an adventurous race where mountain bikers brave challenging weather conditions in November, and bike from Kalkaska to Traverse City, MI. Along with the race itself, the Meijer Slush Cup and Sno-Cone events will be taking place in Traverse City too. We're looking forward to the icy events this year, and want to see your brave self out there this year!

It’s the rewarding involvement from these events and so many more, that make us proud to be a local business fortunate enough to call Traverse City home. It’s our goal to continue to do what we can to make our community a wonderful place to work and play.
