Ways to Live Healthy in 2017

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., – We are just about three weeks into 2017. Many have undoubtedly already set and broke their resolutions for the New Year. This year, instead of setting yourself up for failure by setting lofty fitness goals, let's all resolve to just live a little better. Here's our list of ways to live healthy in 2017:

1. Go outside

This one might sound simple but living in Michigan, we all know the struggle of the dark winter months. If the only sunlight you're absorbing is on the walk to your car after work or through the window next to your desk, your body is probably craving vitamin D. Even if it's just a short walk around the block, your body and brain will be grateful.

2. Put your electronics away

Electronics have taken over our lives. If you're not staring at a computer screen at work all day, odds are you're looking at your cell phone when you get home or watching TV while you wind down at night. Did you know it's not good for your brain to look at electronic screens before bed and can actually stop you from falling asleep properly? Try reading a book before bed to relax instead of scrolling social media.

3. Eat healthy

This doesn't mean throw away everything in your cupboards and go on a crash diet. It's becoming more clear that it's important to pay attention to what we're putting in our bodies. It's also important to be mindful of what types of products we're buying. It's always a good idea to buy locally sourced food when possible and cutting back on sugar and fat will make your body happy. Everything in moderation!

4. Indulge yourself

Setting strict boundaries on eating habits or exercise routines is just setting yourself up to fail. Eat that brownie if you feel like it and treat yourself to that sweater you've been eyeing at the mall. It's not the end of the world to indulge sometimes, especially if your regular habits are rather healthy most of the time. Don't get down on yourself for missing a gym session, just pledge to work that much harder tomorrow. Be kind to yourself.

5. Try something new

Whether it's traveling to a destination you've never been or simply eating a new food, trying new things is exciting! It's always a good idea to have something on the agenda to look forward to, so book that flight or make that reservation at a fancy restaurant. Even something small like picking up a new book can make you feel fulfilled.
