7 Health Tips for Women

7 Health Tips for Women

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.––This week is National Women's Health week, which means it's time for a health review and celebration! Your health as a woman is the most important thing in your life and should be treated as a priority. We know the busyness of life can get in the way of following the healthiest regimen, but there are small things we can do to be healthier and live a fulfilling life. In celebration of Women's Health Week, here are 7 health tips for women useful for each and every day.

1. De-Stress As Much As Needed

Feeling overwhelmed by all the things you need to do, or events that have or haven't occurred yet is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to stress. There are so many things little and big that can bring stress into our lives, which can really take a toll on your body and mind, especially your heart. De-stressing can be done in many ways such as exercise, spending time with a pet, or doing a hobby you love. Whatever it is, make time in your schedule to do so!

2. Exercise & Use Weights!

Many might assume that cardio alone is a great exercise to lose weight or stay healthy, but you can be doing much more to elevate your health benefits. Adding weights or resistance (which can include gravity) 3-5 times per week will make your workout much more effective. Not only does it help build core strength, but it also helps your body function better all around throughout your daily movements. You can think of it as preventative maintenance on your body as the stronger your muscles are, the less likely you are to suffer from small injuries or pain.

3. Get A Good Night's Rest Almost Every Night

From worries that keep our minds churning late, to our children that cry in the middle of the night, to physical and emotional pains we might feel, getting sleep can seem like an elusive task. Making sleep seem a little easier can be as simple as putting it on your schedule. Aim to add a half hour or hour to your sleep schedule for the next few weeks. Eventually you'll be in the routine and will have gained extra time to allow your body and brain to refresh while you dream. Adults typically only need about 7 hours of solid sleep. If you're having trouble falling or staying asleep, a discussion with your doctor might be necessary.

4. Visit Your Doctors

Again with the concept of a busy life, it's hard to fit things in. If you think of your health as a priority, however, you won't find visiting the doctor a waste of time or a chore! It's important to not only have a yearly check-up with just your physician, but also your OBGYN, your dentist, and other specialty doctors dependent on your condition. If something's bothering you, don't just Google it, ask your doctor! Most times, you're not alone in whatever is going on. Trust in the medical professionals to assist in making your life both comfortable and fulfilling in a healthy manner.

5. Drink Your Beverages Wisely

As with most health conscious minds, we do recommend drinking lots of water throughout your day. Your body benefits from water in a multitude of ways including better nutrient deliverance, better body temperature regulation, better mood, better digestion, etc. You don't have to drink straight water all day long, coffee and tea count towards your daily water consumption goal. Despite what you may have heard, the amount of water outweighs the caffeine in coffee and tea so they won't actually dehydrate you. Another consideration is limiting your alcohol intake to one drink or none at all both daily to maximize your health, and never drive when drinking!

6. Eat Well & Take Vitamins

This one seem obvious, but it's more important than you think! There's constantly new advice that circulates on what to do and what not to do in terms of health, and some of it is reliable advice and some of it is not. Sticking to time tested advice like get your veggies and fruit in, eat less red meat, eat less processed foods, and limit fat and sugar is the best way to go about eating. In terms of vitamins, a multivitamin can help, while special vitamins or supplements may help other ailments like Omega-3 pills for heart health. It's up to you to do what feels right for your body, and your doctors can help you determine what to do based on your specific needs.

7. Treat Yourself

Our last tip goes along the lines of the first tip. Having self love and showing yourself appreciation from time to time for all the hard work you do is essential to your mental health! Whether it's buying those shoes you really want, having a big cone of ice cream, going on a solo drive with no destination, booking a trip, etc, it'll help you appreciate life through all the stresses and mess.
